The Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa’s only nuclear power plant, began commercial operation in February 1975. Located in Palo, Iowa, about 9 miles northwest of Cedar Rapids, it was built in a low-seismic-risk area near the Cedar River and designed to withstand major flooding. After a derecho in August 2020 caused severe damage to its cooling towers, the 615-MW facility was retired earlier than its planned date in 2025.
