METRO Manila registered a lower crime rate in 2018 from 2017, which includes the eight focus crimes, according to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) on Wednesday.
The NCRPO said 14,633 cases of the eight focus crimes — murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, carnapping of motor vehicle, and carnapping of motorcycle — were recorded in 2018 or a 21.01 percent drop from the 18,524 in 2017.
The biggest drop was for murder, with police recording 738 incidents in 2018, down 52.14 percent from the 1,542 in 2017.
Homicide was also down by 27.27 percent or 272 in 2018 from 374 in 2017.
Incidents of physical injury were down by 23.27 percent or 3,509 recorded in 2018 from 4,573 in 2017.
Robbery also declined by 17.62 percent or 2,534 recorded in 2018 from 3,076 in 2017.
Theft registered a 16.99 percent drop in 2018 or 5,580 in 2018 from 6,722 in 2017.
The number of stolen motorcycles was also down by 16.39 percent or 755 in 2018 from 903 in 2017.
Motor vehicles that were carnapped dropped by 11.82 percent as police recorded 179 cases in 2018 from 203 in 2017.
The drop in rape cases was the lowest at 5.75 percent or 1,066 in 2018 from 1,131 in 2017.
San Juan City recorded the biggest drop in monthly index crime rate at 7.84 percent in 2018 from 13.32 percent in 2017; followed by Manila City, 12.13 percent in 2018 from 17.13 in 2017; and Quezon City, 12.20 percent in 2018 from 16.32 percent in 2017.
Not all cities, however, saw a decrease in their average monthly index crime rate. Pasay City’s crime rate increased from 12.72 percent in 2017 to 12.76 in 2018 and Las Piñas’ from 249 in 2017 to 272 in 2018.
NCRPO Director Guillermo Eleazar attributed the decline to “lessons learned during the first year of the Campaign Against Illegal Drugs and [other courses] of criminalities.”
He also cited the “effective interventions” that were established “that’s why we were able to improve and we keep on improving.”
