TWELVE prison gangs inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) agreed to disband and end their criminal activities inside and outside the national penitentiary — a gesture that the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said could mark the start of a decrease in street crimes in the country.

Tearing and burning their gang insignias in front of BuCor officials, led by Director Nicanor Faeldon, on Thursday morning, the prisoners officially abolished the gang systems inside the penitentiary.

Faeldon said with such a “monumental” gesture, the NBP community and the BuCor could finally fulfill its task of renewing and reforming inmates.

“We have finally reached this chapter. You, yourselves can start curbing the rise of syndicated crimes in the country, you are now part of the solution in ending street crimes,” Faeldon told the inmates. NEIL JAYSON N. SERVALLOS
