THE United States on Thursday urged the Philippines to expedite its improvement of security measures in all of its airports.
US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim said that “Philippine authorities have worked diligently to improve security measures.”
Kim noted, however, that the Philippines has yet to meet aviation security standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
“We fully expect that they will soon meet ICAO security standards,” Kim said in a statement on Thursday.
He said that the US government was “collaborating closely with the Philippines’ Department of Transportation and related agencies.”
He expressed “confidence in their leadership and their commitment to improve aviation security.”
The ambassador said that the US actively supported Philippine efforts to improve its aviation security.
For example, Kim said the US State Department has approved $5 million for airport security improvements at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to include critical training and technology improvements.
“The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) also provided Aviation Security Advisors to the Philippine government to assist with development and implementation of corrective measures at NAIA,” he said.
“The TSA also conducted an analysis of NAIA security operations and provided recommendations on technology use and maintenance, streamlining screening operations, and modernization of NAIA security infrastructure,” Kim added.
Established in 1944, the ICAO is a United Nations (UN) specialized agency tasked to manage the administration and governance of the Convention on International Civil Aviation or the Chicago Convention.
