SAN PEDRO CITY — Six people, including two young children, died while several others were injured after a truck rammed 15 cars, two tricycles, and two motorcycles before crashing into a roadside bakery in Sta. Rosa City in Laguna province.
The accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday along the Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay road in Barangay (village) Sto. Domingo, said Laguna police director Sr. Supt. Eleazar Matta.
In a text message, Matta identified the fatalities as Lorelyn Rosel Sumadsad, brothers Jerome and Jayson Baluya, one-year-old Quelah Ayesha Velasco, Juvelyn Floresco Delizo and her daughter Ariane Kaye Yllera, 2.
He said 14 others were injured and are being treated in hospitals.
Case investigator Police Officer 3 Daniel Bahiwag, in a phone interview, said a ten-wheeler truck loaded with metal bearings, appeared to have “lost its brakes” as it came running down fast, hitting the other vehicles.
“The truck was too fast. It happened when traffic was slow with people coming from Nuvali,” Bahiwag said, referring to the popular shopping and commercial district in Sta. Rosa City.
He said the truck, being driven by Anthony Bernardo from Dasmariñas City, Cavite, crashed into a roadside bakery and another establishment. The fatalities were either sleeping inside the bakery or walking on the side of the road
The police said the truck driver escaped after the accident.
It took police and city rescuers six hours before the stretch of road was cleared but the truck as of 9 a.m. has not yet been pulled out of the site. /je
