The Catholic Church has renewed its call on authorities to be compassionate and stop the killing in the implementation of the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.

“Ours is a plea for compassion, which does not contradict justice, mercy, not condemnation,” said Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David in a media forum in Manila.

He said the Catholic Church was not against the government’s drive against illegal drugs.

“The Church never got in the way of the fight against illegal drugs because we know that it must be stopped because illegal drugs are a plague. They must have misunderstood us,” David said.

“They always say that we only care about the human rights of criminals. That is not true. We care about the human right of every individual human being,” he added.

He challenged the government to be the Church’s partner if it was a “disciple of peace,” arguing that the government could not rehabilitate dead people.

He added that the government should protect, not execute, drug victims.

“I am really deeply worried about the culture of violence and impunity in our country,” he said.

On Thursday, President Rodrigo Duterte warned of “widespread violence” as the government continues its campaign against illegal drugs.
