CA justices top bets for SC post

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has prepared a shortlist of candidates for the post that would be left vacant when Supreme Court Associate Justice Noel Tijam retires in January 2019.
The JBC held public interviews of the aspirants on December 5.
Justices Mariano del Castillo, Francis Jardeleza, Antonio Carpio and Lucas Bersamin are also set to retire next year.
The top candidates vying for the post to be vacated by Tijam are Court of Appeals justices Manuel Barrios, Japar Dimaampao and Amy Lazaro-Javier. They each got six votes.
Those who got five votes were Jsandiganbayan Justice Amparo Cabotaje -Tang, and Court of Appeals justices Ramon Cruz, Ramon Garcia and Mario Lopez.
Meanwhile, justices Apolinario Bruselas and Cesar Villanueva and Supreme Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez each got four votes.
From the Academe, also vying for the post were Centro Escolar University Vice Dean Rita Linda Jimeno and former Ateneo Law Dean Cesar Villanueva.
The JBC will submit to President Rodrigo Duterte a shortlist of applicants.
