President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the proposal of the military and police to extend martial law in Mindanao, sources told The Manila Times.
The Palace sources said Duterte has requested Congress to extend martial rule in Mindanao by one year.
When asked to confirm, Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo said he still has no information on Duterte’s decision.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines recommended the extension of martial law in Mindanao for another year as it cited persisting threats of terrorism.
Leaders of the Philippine National Police backed the extension.
Duterte first placed Mindanao under martial law in May 2017 after Islamic State-inspired terrorists laid siege on Marawi City.
Congress extended it until the end of 2018. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
