Magnolia’s Travis gets pat on the back from ‘King’ James

Magnolia import Romeo Travis’ feat of leading the Hotshots to victory with a career-high 50 points and 13 rebounds on Friday in Antipolo has caught the attention of NBA superstar LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers.

“Headed to the Finals on a 50-piece nugget! Congrats my brother Romeo Travis. Keep going lucky lefty,” James posted on Instagram on Friday night after Magnolia’s 112-108 victory over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in Game 4 of their best-of-five semifinals series in Season 43 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup.

James and Travis are longtime friends since the early 2000s during their early playing days at the St. Vincent-St. Mary secondary school in Akron, Ohio.

Magnolia wrapped up the series at 3-1. The win that halted Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s two-year reign as Governors’ Cup champions also earned the Hotshots their sixth Governors’ Cup Finals appearance and 29th overall since joining the league in 1988.

Meanwhile, Magnolia coach Chito Victolero praised Travis’ stellar performance in Game 4 despite a hamstring injury. Travis collided head on against Ginebra’s Justin Brownlee, Greg Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar and Scottie Thompson.

“I admire his heart. He told me, ‘Don’t worry coach I will do my best, it will get better now,” Victolero told the media after the win.

“I really love this guy (Travis). The quality of leadership he has shown us from the beginning is incomparable. He gave his all after Game 3.”

Travis scored a measly 12 points in Game 3 where Magnolia lost 103-107 to Barangay Ginebra.

Magnolia will be facing either Alaska or Meralco in the best-of-seven Finals. Both teams are still playing at press time in the other semis series.
