Cebu town mayor gunned down
Mayor Mariano Blanco 3rd was declared dead on arrival at about1:30 a.m.
According to a report from the Cebu Provincial Police Office, four unidentified men got down from a white van, held security from the Ronda Municipality at gunpoint and ordered them to drop on the ground.
A burst of gunfire was heard from the mayor’s office, where Blanco was sleeping at that time.
The assailants immediately left the area, leaving behind a bloodied Blanco.
Pursuit operations are ongoing while the crime scene is being processed.
Blanco was previously stripped of police powers last year for his alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade in the area.
His son, Ronda vice mayor Jonah John Ungab, was killed by unidentified men last February. Ungab is the lawyer of self-confessed drug lord Kerwin Espinosa.
He was also gunned down by unidentified assailants after attending a court hearing of his client for a gun ban case.
Blanco is the seventh local chief executive killed this year and the 16th under the Duterte administration.
