20 ‘illegal foreign vendors’ arrested in Manila
TWENTY people identified as Chinese nationals were arrested in a Manila shopping mall for selling goods without permits, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said in a statement on Sunday.
In a statement on Sunday, Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said that the suspects were arrested inside the 11/88 mall in Regente Street, Binondo on Friday while selling goods.
The “illegal” vendors will undergo “summary deportation proceedings for working without permits and violating the conditions of their stay in the country,” said Morente.
Manahan also wanted the Chinese nationals deported if they failed to present legal documents for violating the Philippine Immigration Act.
“We will recommend to our legal division the filing of deportation charges against them for violating our immigration laws,” Manahan said.
They are being held at the BI Detention Facility in Bicutan, Taguig City, Morente said.
As tourists, foreigners do not have the privilege to engage in “gainful activities in the country,” he said. CATHERINE A. MODESTO
