Labor leads National Heroes’ Day march to Mendiola

LABOR groups and rights advocates will march on Monday, National Heroes’ Day, to protest abuses against workers, low wages, contractualization and human rights.

Thousands are expected to assemble at Welcome Rotonda in Quezon City and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) along Espana Boulevard as early as 9 a.m. for the “Martsa ng Manggagawa” to Mendiola.

According to the Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP), the march seeks to end contractualization; put a stop to high prices, burdensome taxes, the violent dispersals of workers’ strikes; and protect the rights of Filipino workers here and abroad.

“Filipino workers are today’s heroes. On our shoulders we bear the responsibility of building a modern society but with the treatment we are receiving from the Duterte administration and those before him, we can no longer remain idle and accept oppression as our fate. We are not martyrs,” BMP chief Luke Espiritu said.

Participating in the march are labor groups Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), Partido Manggagawa, BMP, Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa (Sentro), and United Filipino Service Workers (UFSW).

Also joining are church groups such as the Archdiocese of the Manila Ministry of Labor Concerns, Urban Missionaries, Church-Labor Conference (CLC) and the Church-People and Workers’ Conference (CWS). GLEE JALEA
