Spanish tourist arrested for assault of Filipina partner
A SPANISH tourist was arrested after assaulting his Filipina partner in a bar in Makati on Sunday, police said.
Antonio Guerrero Castro, 40, was apprehended by security officials of Havana Bar in Greenbelt 3 following an assault complaint filed by Marilyn Dugan, his partner of two years.
Security guard Sandy Limbo said the two were having drinks at the bar when the suspect took Dugan’s cellular phone from her bag. When she tried to retrieve it, Castro strangled the 39-year-old Dugan and slapped her repeatedly.
Makati Police chief Rogelio Simon said the incident involving foreigners was the second to have happened this week.
“Sobrang dami ng foreign nationals dito sa Makati, both tourist and staying here for good like students, businessmen and members of [the]diplomatic corps. And ang tendency is for them to enjoy their stay here, at ‘di talaga maiwasan na nasasangkot sila,” Simon told the Manila Times.
Simon said most foreigners were usually involved on petty crimes.
The Makati Police chief reiterated his point that bar owners may apprehend criminals in their establishments, saying the arrest of Castro was a manifestation of improved security measures, following the Time in Manila Bar drug bust.
Last August 22, an American and Syrian were arrested in a bar for possession of marijuana leaves and tried to bribe security personnel to settle the incident.
Castro and Dugan were brought to Ospital ng Makati in Pembo for medical examination before they were turned over to the Makati Police Women’s Desk for further investigation and proper disposition. NEIL JAYSON N. SERVALLOS
