Isabela man killed, cop hurt in scuffle

SANTIAGO CITY — A man was killed by a policeman, who was beaten and then shot, during a Friday night (Aug. 24) altercation at the city center, the police said on Sunday.

Police Officer 2 Christian Espiritu spotted Angelo Mangantulao, Daniel Binoya, and Sherwin Marinayin acting suspiciously and accosted them, said Chief Inspector Rolando Gatan, chief of Santiago City police station 1.

The three men allegedly attacked Espiritu, who fell and dropped his gun.

Mangantulao then shot the policeman in the arm. But Espiritu managed to retrieve his weapon and shot back, killing Mangantulao. Binoya and Marinayin have been detained, but have claimed they did not know Mangantulao.

Forensic investigators found a cal. 22 handgun still gripped by the slain Mangantulao at the crime scene. His relatives have accused the police of planting the gun. /je
