LPA north of Luzon enhancing monsoon rains—Pagasa
A LOW pressure area (LPA) north of Luzon is enhancing the southwest monsoon or “habagat” and may likely intensify into a tropical depression, the state-run weather bureau said on Thursday.
As of 9 a.m., the LPA was 305 kilometers (km) northwest of extreme Northern Luzon but still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), according to senior weather specialist Meno Mendoza of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
The LPA may intensify into a tropical depression within 24 to 48 hours, Mendoza said.
Typhoon “Cimaron” which is also outside PAR, is triggering monsoon rains from the eastern portion of Luzon.
It was located 1,660 km northeast of extreme Northern Luzon with winds of 160 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of 195 kph. It is moving northwest at 35 kph but is unlikely to enter the country.
The enhanced southwest monsoon is bringing cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Zambales, Bataan, Batanes, and Babuyan Group of Islands.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers caused by localized thunderstorms.
