7 BIFF killed in military operation
SEVEN members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were killed during a surgical operation the military launched in Barongis, Maguindanao, the Philippine Army confirmed on Tuesday.
Capt. Arvin Encinas, spokesman for the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID), said the bombardment was conducted from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday in Sitio Kabasalan, Barangay Darampua in Barongis town.
Encinas said based on information from civilians, the military, using a mortar and a 105mm Howitzer tank targeted the hideout of the bandits under the BIFF Abu Torayfe faction.
The BIFF lair was being used to manufacture improvised explosive devices and launch bomb attacks.
Encinas quoted the reports from the ground, saying seven BIFF members were killed as the military dropped bombs on the bandits’ hideout. As of this writing, no bodies had been retrieved yet.
Encinas also said the BIFF, particularly the Abu Torayfe faction were “dismantled” as he downplayed the number of terrorists spotted by civilians.
“The troops are currently in a strategic location and it is possible [for the BIFF]to withdraw from their places,” he said, adding that “there was no engagement on the ground, these are just results of our bomb launching and use of the 105mm Howitzers.”
