Xiamen Airlines will be asked to pay for expenses in airport accident — MIAA

THE Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) will ask a Chinese airline company to shoulder the expenses incurred by the Philippine government after one of its planes was involved in an accident at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport that severely disrupted operations.

Manila International Aviation Authority (MIAA) General Manager Ed Monreal said the state-run agency would compute the money spent during the recovery of a Xiamen Air plane that skidded off the main runway of NAIA shortly before midnight on Thursday, resulting in either the cancellation or delay of international and domestic flights.

The aviation authority rented two $500-cranes to remove the aircraft from the grassy portion of the NAIA.

“Every expense, the whole package on what has been spent during the recovery will be charged to them,” Monreal said in a press briefing on Saturday night.

Asked for an estimated cost, Monreal said MIAA could not provide rough figures yet as investigation was ongoing.

The official also said the MIAA and Xiamen Air would meet on Monday. “Maybe we’ll talk about what are the charges they are due or [the things]they will have to pay.”

Monreal also said that affected passengers have the right to file charges against the Chinese carrier.

Although MIAA announced that NAIA’s international runway has resumed flight operations, thousands of passengers remained stranded at the airport.

As of posting time, 51 flights have been cancelled.
