PH team needs speed, impeccable shooting for Asiad – Guiao
National team coach Yeng Guiao said that the Philippine squad, composed mostly of Rain or Shine players, should rely on speed and outside shooting in their campaign in the Asian Games in Indonesia that begins August 16.
The PH is bracketed in Group D with Kazakhstan and China. The Filipinos will face Kazakhstan on August 16 and China on August 21 at the Istora Gelora Bung Kamo in Jakarta.
“They are both tough opponents,” said Guiao, referring to Kazakhstan and China. “The best chance really is to beat Kazakhstan. You win one game —you advance. I feel good about the chemistry and I feel good about the combination of personalities and players.”
“It’s hard to design defense without scouting your opponents first. We would just rely on our offensive system first and then work on our defense later,” added Guiao.
Guiao named the members of the 12-man team on Friday at the Meralco gym. The roster includes Beau Belga, James Yap, Maverick Ahanmisi, Raymond Almazan, Chris Tiu, Gabe Norwood, Stanley Pringle, JP Erram, Paul Asi Taulava, Christian Standhardinger, Paul Lee and Jordan Clarkson.
“We’re not taller than them hence we should be faster and able to shoot more accurately.”
Guiao said that he’s still waiting if the NBA will allow Clarkson to join the PH’s campaign in the Asiad. If the NBA would not allow Clarkson, Don Trollano of TNT will rejoin the final 12 line-up.
The Philippine team beat TNT KaTropa, 78-76, in a tune-up game at the Moro Lorenzo Gym in Quezon City on Saturday.
The PH team will depart for Jakarta on Sunday night.
