5 killed, 2 wounded in Basilan explosion

FOUR members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) and one soldier were killed after an explosion in Lamitan City, Basilan on Tuesday

morning, according to the military’s Western Mindanao Command.

Lt. Col. Gerry Besana, WestMinCom spokesman, said the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) took place at 5:50 a.m. on Tuesday at Barangay Colonia in Lamitan City.

This resulted in the deaths of four Cafgu members and one soldier with two more Cafgu wounded after the explosion.

Besana said military forces from the 9th Scout Ranger Company were acting upon a report of the presence of a white van that was suspected carrying an IED near the Magkawit detachment of the Philippine Army.

He added that while the military was

conducting its operations, the vehicle exploded leading to the casualties.

Besana also denied the incident as a “suicide bombing” done by terrorists in the area.
