UPDATE: 10 killed, 2 wounded in Basilan explosion
TEN people were killed after an explosion in Basilan on Tuesday morning, according to the military’s Western Mindanao Command.
Lt. Col. Gerry Besana, WestMinCom spokesman, said the blast from an improvised explosive device (IED) took place at 5:50 a.m. on Tuesday at Barangay Colonia in Lamitan City.
Of the number, five were members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu), four were civilians and one soldier.
Besana said troops from the 9th Scout Ranger Company were acting on a report on the presence of a white van that was suspected of carrying an IED near the Magkawit detachment of the Philippine Army.
He added that while the military was conducting its operations, the vehicle exploded.
Besana also denied that the incident was a “suicide bombing” from terrorists in the area.
