Clark Jets cruise past foes

The Clark Jets bagged the Globe Rugby Sevens Series National Development first leg title over the weekend at the Southern Plains in Calamba, Laguna.

Led by Jovan Masalunga of the Philippine Volcanoes, The Clark Jets bested the Makati Chiefs (43-0), the Eagles RFC Colts (30-0), La Liga (24-5) and the Santos Knight Frank Mavericks (34-10) for the local Rugby Sevens Festival crown.

On display during the tournament was the Webb Ellis Cup also known as the World Rugby Cup trophy.

“It was a great opportunity playing for the Webb Ellis Cup and then to win the Globe Rugby Sevens Series first leg was so unbelievable, great feeling for myself and for the boys as well, great to play in such condition,” Masalunga told The Manila Times on Saturday at the Crimson Hotel in Filinvest Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

“It’s really a big thing to start the Sevens series. The boys just also won the recent PNG (Philippine National Games).”

The other members of the Clark Jets are Joemari Rauras, national player Jonel Madrona, Marlon Catepon, Kingsley Ballesteros, Jay R Ramirez, Terryboy Cayetano, Michael Maralas, Mark John Magno, Rico Comeo, Romeo Cayetano and John Michael Aquino.

Masalunga said the Clark Jets will next see action in the sevens series open division.

“We have some foreigners within our club and actually the 2018 first leg of the open seven series of open division will be next, so local and foreign players will combine forces to take on the best teams around the Philippines,” added Masalunga.

Masalunga, also the Philippine Rugby Football Union competition events and education manager, said he is very glad for the presence of the Webb Ellis Cup.

“It is the Rugby World Cup trophy and it was first introduced in 1987. England won it in 2003, when I was a teenager and I’m so happy about it. The Rugby World Cup is the third biggest sporting event in the world after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.”

“It was named after the founder of Rugby, Webb Ellis, and it is rugby’s biggest prize. It’s such a privilege and such an honor for it to be here in the Philippines, and displays it in front of the local Rugby community and for anyone else to see it,” Masalunga concluded. JOSEF T. RAMOS
