Signal No. 1 up over parts of Northern Luzon as ‘Henry’ makes landfall in Cagayan–Pagasa

TROPICAL depression “Heny” has made landfall over Cagayan and is now heading towards the West Philippine Sea, the state-run weather bureau said on Tuesday.

Henry hit land over Dalupiri Island after it first made landfall over Camiguin Island late Monday night, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (Pagasa).

“Henry is expected to approach the northwestern boundary of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) sometime today,” senior weather specialist Chris Perez said.

As of 6 a.m., Henry was 95 kilometers (km) west of Calayan, Cagayan packing winds of 60 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of 75 kph as it moved west northwest at 20 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.1 remains up over Batanes, northern portion of Cagayan including Babuyan Group of Islands, northern portion of Apayao, and northern portion of Ilocos Norte with occasional gusty winds of 30 to 60 kilometers per hour (kph) expected in 36 hours.

Henry is also enhancing the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” which brings monsoon rains over Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro provinces, Palawan and Western Visayas.

An Orange warning level has been raised over Batangas and Bataan, which means there is a threat of flooding.

A yellow alert is up over Metro Manila, Cavite, and Zambales, which means flooding is possible in low lying areas.

Light to moderate with occasional heavy rains are affecting Rizal, Laguna, Bulacan, Pampanga and Quezon, which may persist within three hours while Tarlac and Nueva Ecija will have light to moderate rain for the next one to two hours.

Scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms because of local thunderstorms are being experienced over the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, Pagsasa warned of a new low pressure area inside the PAR, moving closer to Luzon, which may also enhance the southwest monsoon and develop into a tropical depression.

“There is another low pressure area inside PAR which may intensify into a tropical depression in 48 hours. It was located 825 km east of Infanta, Quezon this morning,” said Perez.

The public and the disaster risk reduction management councils concerned are advised to monitor for updates and take precautionary measures against possible flash floods and landslides within the day, Pagasa said. GLEE JALEA
