PH military modernization a ‘waste of money,’ says exiled communist leader
EXILED Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria “Joma” Sison branded the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) modernization program, as a “waste” of government funds.
“[Duterte] is wasting tax money and borrowed funds for counter-productive purposes,” the communist leader said in a Facebook post on Thursday night.
“Duterte imagines that he has all the money to spend for military equipment and operations,” said Sison, citing reports of President Rodrigo Duterte’s approval of the second horizon of the military’s modernization program.
The approved equipment included submarines, frigates and corvettes for the Philippine Navy; multi-role fighters for the Philippine Air Force; and Howitzer tanks for the Philippine Army, among others.
National Defense Spokesman Arsenio Andolong said that the overall cost of the second horizon was estimated at P300 billion, which the Department of Budget and Management has yet to approve. DEMPSEY REYES
