PH to have up to 13 more cyclones in 2018 — Pagasa
THE Philippines may have up to 13 tropical cyclones spread from June to November 2018, the state-run weather bureau said on Monday.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), in it launch of the Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week, advised the public to prepare for the coming storms.
“The remaining days of June will have generally near to above normal amount of rainfall over most parts of the country,” Venus Valdemoro, chief information officer, said during a briefing at the Pagasa headquarters in Quezon City.
July will also have near to above normal rainfall amount in most parts of Luzon; August will have near to above normal in Visayas and Mindanao; and September will have near to above normal rainfall amount in most parts of Northern and Central Luzon.
October will have a generally normal amount of rainfall in Visayas and Mindanao, and November will have generally near to above normal rainfall amount in most parts of the country.
Valdemoro said that each month may have an average of two to four tropical cyclones, apart from other weather systems that may enter the country.
“These include the enhanced southwest monsoon, local thunderstorms, intertropical convergence zone, low pressure areas, easterlies, and the northeast monsoon (by October),” she said.
Storms that have entered the country were Agaton, Basyang, Caloy, and Domeng and Ester in June.
Pagasa declared the start of the rainy season on June 8 but warned that there would be breaks that may follow lasting from several days to two weeks. GLEE JALEA
