An SUV that will change your pace
In an effort to further carve out a profitable slice of the domestic market, Nissan Philippines Inc. (NPI) recently launched a variant that aims to compete head-on with the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Montero, among others.
Launched at the sprawling grounds of the Clark Global City in Angeles, Pampanga, NPI transformed a vacant portion of the grounds into an off-road playground for the regional and local motoring media to see the performance capabilities of the Terra. “Over 60 years of SUV heritage went into the development of the Nissan Terra,” stated Ramesh Narasimhan, president and managing director of NPI.
Powered by a 190-bhp YD25 diesel engine, with a torque of 450 Nm at 2,000 rpm, Nissan’s SUV is a descendant of the Patrol, the tough off-road icon originally designed for police and military use.
The Terra shares its platform with the Navara pick-up, Nissan’s best-seller that has managed to overtake the Ford Ranger in terms of sales in the domestic pick-up segment. It sits on a reinforced chassis, five-link coil spring rear suspension system, and rigid wheel axle that works together to ensure strength, durability, comfort, and convenience. Members of the motoring media were able to put the Terra through its paces in “Delta 5,” a popular off-road trail in Mabalacat, Pampanga. The riverbed with its soft sand and challenging terrain tested the SUV’s off-road features.
Inside the Terra is Nissan’s host of intelligent mobility technologies that are all within easy reach of the driver. These technologies include lane departure warning, blind spot warning, and Intelligent Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection. This innovative feature allows drivers to see images from a camera mounted at the back and viewed from the rear view mirror.
Inside the cabin, this SUV offers plush leather seating for seven full-sized adults, with the convenience of a one-touch remote fold and tumble second row seats. Despite the searing humidity, the climate control system kept us comfortably cool inside the cabin and the Blaupunkt audio system entertained the participants throughout the two-hour off-road trek.
Nissan’s V-motion grille design contributed to its robust exterior, and the boomerang style LED headlamps accentuated its sharp and commanding presence. “The new Terra is designed to give you the confidence to take your family on exceptional urban and outdoor adventures by providing a no-compromise package,” added Dax Avenido, Nissan PH’s newly-minted assistant general manager.
Reservations for the Terra are now available in all Nissan dealers nationwide. Nissan expects customers to have their Terra SUVs in their garage by August 20 this year. To experience Nissan’s latest Intelligent Mobility, the entry level Terra 2.5-liter Mid 4×4 with a six-speed manual transmission with set you back by P1.499 million, while the top-end Terra 2.5 Premium 4×4 with seven-speed automatic transmission is priced at P2.096 million.
