Mayors top second PDEA drug list, says Director Aquino
MAYORS from at least three regions in the country topped a new list of drug suspects from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), its Director Aaron Aquino said in a press conference on Tuesday.
Aquino said PDEA was currently validating the list containing the names of 93 local officials, about 60 of who were mayors, mostly from Northern Mindanao, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and Calabarzon.
The other local officials were town councilors and vice governors.
“In the 93 listed, more than half of them are mayors which are about 60 plus of them. There’s a few vice mayors, congressmen, and few vice governors,” Aquino said.
He said he would also check on whether there were governors.
Aquino admitted that there were officials who talked to him and tried to clear their names.
“A few of them went to my office and tried to clear their names. The longest one took us two and a half hours in which an official convinced me why is he not involved [in any illegal drug activities],” Aquino said
He said that he may reveal the second narcolist one to two weeks from now but it would still depend on President Rodrigo Duterte.
The first narcolist from PDEA was released in April involving 211 barangay officials.
