Canada has been profoundly influenced by the contributions of immigrant Black Canadians who have excelled in various fields such as politics, activism, arts, and business. Their stories reflect resilience, determination, and success, aligning with the theme for Black History month this year: “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.”

Black History Month was officially recognized in December 1995 by Canada’s House of Commons, following a motion put forward by MP Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian to be elected to Parliament. An immigrant from Grenada, Augustine is a Top 25 Canadian Immigrant (2011)
