As the fall semester approaches, international students returning to schools across Canada face a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Whether you are resuming in-person classes or continuing with a hybrid learning model, here are some essential tips to help you navigate the new academic year successfully.

Stay informed about immigration regulations

Ensure that your study permit, visa, and other necessary documents are up to date. There have been a number of additions and amendments for international students recently. Be aware of any changes in immigration regulations that might affect your status as an international student in Canada. Regularly check with your school’s international student office for guidance on maintaining your legal status and understanding any new requirements.

Prepare financially for the year ahead

Returning to school can come with various expenses, from tuition fees to everyday living costs. Take time to review your budget and financial plan for the year. Make sure you have a clear understanding of your expenses, including housing, groceries, transportation, and textbooks. It’s never late to look into available scholarships, bursaries, and financial aid that you may qualify for to help ease the financial burden. Additionally, after you have a sense of what your workload at school would be, consider finding a part-time job on campus or within the community to supplement your income. Use your credit card wisely and stay up to date about any offers that you can take advantage of and be aware of any extra charges that might add up on your credit card.

Beware of scamsters

International students are often targeted by fraudsters who might take advantage of a language barrier of the lack of knowledge of Canadian culture. Students fall prey to housing scams where they are promised rental accommodation, are urged to sign a lease and pay the deposit upfront. Other scams that have been reported in the recent past include being offered high end items like smartphones at hugely discounted prices, and job offer scams by fake recruiters. Make sure you don’t share your bank account details and SIN number with any person over the phone or email. A good way to keep a track of the latest scams out there is to keep checking the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Reconnect and build your network

Building a strong support network is crucial for success in both academic and personal life. Make an effort to reconnect with friends, classmates, and professors from previous semesters. Participate in student clubs, organizations, and events to meet new people and expand your network.  If you haven’t already, now that you are more familiar with campus culture, joining an international student association can also be a great way to connect with peers who share similar experiences and challenges. If you’ve been away for long, take the time to reacquaint yourself with Canadian customs, social norms, and language. Engage with the local community, explore your surroundings, and participate in cultural events. This will not only help you feel more comfortable but also enrich your overall experience.

Focus on your health and well-being

Your physical and mental health are vital to your overall success. Prioritize self-care by maintaining a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and ensuring adequate sleep. Many campuses offer health services, including access to doctors, counselors, and wellness programs. If you ever feel overwhelmed or stressed, don’t hesitate to seek support from a mental health professional or a trusted advisor.

Stay organized and manage your time effectively

With the return to classes, managing your time effectively will be key to balancing academics, work, and social activities. Use a planner or digital calendar to keep track of important dates, such as assignment deadlines, exams, and extracurricular activities. Establish a study routine and set aside time each week to review your coursework. Staying organized will help reduce stress and ensure you stay on top of your responsibilities. Success at school greatly eases mental stress and leaves you enough time for extracurricular activities that are crucial for your all-round development.
