Minister for youth highlights initiatives for young Canadians to develop digital skills

International Youth Day, celebrated annually on August 12, highlights the need to improve the lives of youth around the world.
This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” emphasizes how technology can address global challenges and showcases how young people are leading digital innovation and adoption.
In Canada, nearly one-fifth of the population consists of youth and young adults aged 15-29.
In a statement for International Youth Day, Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, said: “Technology continues to evolve in ways we might never have imagined, and young people are at the forefront of creating and using this technology. It is now more important than ever to equip and empower the next generation with the tools they need to bring forth their innovations, leverage their creativity, and succeed in an increasingly digital world.”
Ien emphasized Canada’s commitment to support young people in developing digital and other relevant skills for the future by highlighting the following initiatives.
Youth Employment and Skills Strategy: This initiative, delivered in partnership with 12 federal departments, agencies and Crown corporations, helps Canadian youth aged 15 to 30 develop the skills and gain the experience they need to successfully transition into the labour market.
Canada Summer Jobs: The program provides placements for young people across Canada, including opportunities in sustainable development and the digital skills sector.
Student Work Placement Program: This program helps post-secondary students acquire new skills through hands-on work opportunities across various sectors, including in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), information and communication technology (ICT) and media production.
Canada Service Corps: This initiative funds organizations that help youth find meaningful and unique volunteer opportunities, allowing them to gain hands-on experience and take action to create a better future for themselves, their families and their communities.
