MANILA, Philippines —  Malacañang suspended work in government and classes in all levels in Metro Manila as well as in Central Luzon and Calabarzon today due to incessant rains brought by Super Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon or habagat.

In a statement, the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) said the suspension was “in view of the continuous rainfall” brought about by the two weather disturbances.

It will also allow “the rescue, recovery, relief and rehabilitation efforts of the government and the private sector,” the OES added.

“However, those agencies whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services,” the OES said.

The suspension of work of private companies and offices was left to the discretion of their respective heads, it said.

Work in government and classes in all levels in Metro Manila have been suspended since Tuesday afternoon due to heavy rains that caused severe flooding in many areas.

In Taguig, the city government has announced the suspension of classes at all levels in both public and private schools today following the announcement of Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos to place Metro Manila under a state of calamity.

“This is to ensure the safety of our students, teachers, and staff, and allow communities to recover from the impact of massive flooding in Metro Manila,” the city government said.
