2 pedestrians dead in Batangas road accidents

LUCENA CITY — Two pedestrians died after they were hit in separate road accidents in Batangas province on Friday, Jan. 19

Batangas police reported on Saturday that Rebie Malunes, 48, and her daughter (whose name was not indicated in the report) were crossing the highway in Barangay (village) Mataas Na Bayan in Lemery town around 7:55 p.m. when a Mitsubishi Montero driven by Shawn Addam Clarin hit her.

Due to the strong impact, Malunes was thrown more than 50 meters away and sustained grave injuries, police said. Her daughter was not hit by the vehicle.

The victim died while being taken to Batangas Provincial Hospital.

In Sto. Tomas City, Jonel Marcelino, 19, was crossing a section of the Maharlika Highway in Barangay San Rafael around 6:10 p.m. when he was bumped by a truck driven by Edmund Velitario.

The victim suffered grave injuries and died on the way to Laurel Memorial District Hospital in neighboring Tanauan City.

The drivers in the two incidents were placed under police custody while the investigation continued.
