Daylight saving time came to an end on November 5th this year. Clocks were turned back by an hour and, while we did gain an extra hour, we’re starting to experience shorter daylight hours for the next four months. While these time changes can often disrupt one’s schedule and lead to feeling out of balance, it can also be a wonderful opportunity for positive changes. As we reset all the clocks, why not take the time to make little changes and reset some new habits for your family?

Ensure family safety

With the arrival of winter, it is important to focus on family safety. Take the time to check house safety and maintenance, such as ensuring fire alarm and carbon dioxide monitors are in good working condition. Restock family emergency and first aid kits, and update your family emergency plan and contact numbers. Get ready for winter weather with winter tires for your car, along with a shovel and salt to clear snow from your driveway. Also, check everyone’s winter wear to ensure these pieces are in good condition, with sufficient reflective materials to increase visibility when out in the dark.

Replenish household materials

Take this time to do an inventory of household materials, too. Organize and donate clothes and toys that your family has outgrown. Restock your kitchen, and discard and replenish expired goods so there are sufficient supplies for snowed-in days or unexpected guests during the upcoming holiday season.

Add a new family ritual

While it might be tempting to spend the extra hour to catch up on such household tasks or work responsibilities, why not take time for yourself and your family instead? Take the time to enjoy each other’s company. Be creative and have fun finding things to do together, whether it is cooking, reading a book or playing family games.

Also take this opportunity to make healthy changes, such as cutting back on computer or TV time, going to bed or waking up earlier, or exercising more. Moreover, take the time to organize family photos, make a slideshow or video of the year’s activities, and use those materials to make family cards to be sent to families and friends for the holiday.

Change is good

While there will be adjustments necessary when the time change happens and there are fewer hours of daylight, the changes are temporary, and children will adapt quickly. Use this opportunity to make some simple yet beneficial changes. Who knows, these changes might have some positive impact for you and your family.
