MANILA, Philippines — The P5,000 chalk allowance that public school teachers receive will now become a cash allowance that they can use to purchase teaching supplies or pay for an internet subscription or annual medical examination for the upcoming school year.
Enrollment in public schools for the next school year is from Aug. 7 to 26, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).
The Senate passed a bill in May that would have increased teachers’ cash allowance to P7,500 this upcoming school year and P10,000 in succeeding years. The House version of the bill remains pending at the committee level.
Public school teachers will receive their one-time cash allowance worth P5,000 when classes open on Aug. 29.
Newly-hired teachers who will assume duty within the first 30 days from the opening of classes are entitled to receive the full allowance, according to DepEd’s Aug. 4 memorandum.
The cash allowance will be 80 percent for those who will assume duty after 30 days but not more than 90 days, 50 percent if after 90 days but not more than 150 days and 20 percent if after 150 days until the end of the school year in June 2024.
Meanwhile, public and private schools should update or encode the students’ profiles in the agency’s Learner Information System using the updated Basic Education Enrollment Form, according to a DepEd memorandum.
The deadline for the submission of documentary requirements in both public and private schools is on Oct. 31.
