Speaker, PNP chief discuss MUP pension fund reforms

MANILA, Philippines — The proposed reform of the military and uniformed personnel (MUP) pension fund was on top of the list of issues tackled during a recent meeting between Speaker Martin Romualdez and Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr.
The two officials met on July 12 and discussed key measures to advance the PNP’s legislative agenda.
During the meeting, Acorda said they are keenly monitoring the progress of the proposed measures likely to affect the 228,000-strong police force and retirees.
“The PNP is hopeful that whatever law is crafted by our legislators will be equitable and just to all the parties concerned,” he said in a statement.
Acorda said representatives from both the active and retired personnel are actively taking part in the discussions, which he considers a positive step moving forward.
He said the proposed MUP Reform Bill in the House of Representatives mirrors Romualdez’s concern for the plight of MUPs and retirees.
Acorda said Romualdez assured him that consultations will continue as Congress aims to find a “win-win” solution on the pension fund issue.
“I was assured by the good Speaker that we will continue to coordinate and get updates while the matter is being discussed,” Acorda said.
He and Romualdez agreed that out-of-the-box solutions should be explored that will be sensitive to the sentiments of the uniformed personnel.
Acorda also briefed Romualdez on their security preparations for President Marcos’ second State of the Nation Address on July 24.
Also discussed during the meeting was the proposed annual budget of the PNP in 2024.
