Minimum wage in Canada by province and upcoming changes

Did you know that Canada’s 10 provinces and 3 territories all have their own minimum wage rate? To keep pace with inflation and to make life more affordable, most of these provinces and territories have raised and/or raising their minimum wage in 2023.

The minimum wage is the basic labour standard that sets the lowest wage rate that an employer can pay to employees. All Canadian jurisdictions (i.e. province or territory) have a general minimum wage rate, which applies to most employees and is always defined as an hourly rate. However, there are special categories with a different minimum wage; this can include students under the age of 18 (in two provinces) and some occupations.

The federal minimum wage increased from $15.55 to $16.65 per hour on April 1, 2023. This wage applies to the federally regulated private sectors, including banks, postal and courier services, and interprovincial air, rail, road, and marine transportation.

The table below provides information on 2023 increases in wage rate. Some provinces are also seeing two increases during the year. Three jurisdictions, Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, have not announced increases in wage rate in 2023.
