JWs deploy mobile Bible carts nationwide

MANILA, Philippines—When not knocking on doors, Jehovah’s Witnesses roll their mobile literature carts on busy streets and public places to encourage people to read the Bible and offer them free Bible lessons in person or online.

In Metro Manila, at least 50 Bible carts on wheels have been seen at train stations, bus stops, select government offices and business areas since September 2022 when JWs, known for their house-to-house preaching, resumed in-person public ministry.

The literature carts display Bible-based books and magazines on mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, family and relationship counsel, coping with grief, discrimination and other anxieties,  according to James Morales, spokesperson of JWs in the Philippines.

Morales said JW initiatives to promote Bible-reading and study gained added relevance as the country celebrated the National Bible Day on Jan. 30.

Following permission from authorities, hundreds of mobile literature carts have been set up in cities and towns nationwide where people can get free copies of the publication in their own language, he said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic and its effects have left people worldwide looking for comfort and security,” said Morales.

“We believe that this special project will have a lasting and beneficial impact on the quality of life of every Filipino family and endeavors to give comfort and hope that things will get better,” he said.

While the house-to-house activities continue to be the primary way through which JWs spread the Bible’s message, literature carts have proven effective in reaching out to people who are busy working.

Morales said two to three volunteers, who stand beside the cart, receive training in safety and security. They also strictly follow COVID protocols, like mask-wearing and physical distancing, he added.

“Passers-by will not be aggressively approached or engaged, but will approach us on their own initiative. We want to assure the public that no solicitations and donations will be taken throughout our cart display,” he said.
