Watch films online free of charge for Asian Heritage Month

This May, the National Film Board of Canada (nfb.ca) is offering films free of charge to mark Asian Heritage Month.

A curated selection of nearly 30 short and feature-length documentaries and animated films are available on the Asian Communities in Canada channel on the NFB website. These celebrate the culture, arts, history and contributions of Canadians of Asian descent.

Julia Kwan’s feature-length documentary Everything Will Be captures a significant moment of time in Vancouver’s Chinatown, with the influx of condos and new, non-Chinese businesses. The film follows a year in the life of several Chinatown denizens, including a 90-year-old Chinese newspaper street vendor and a second-generation tea shop owner, as they navigate this community in flux. 

Anne Marie Nakagawa’s documentary Between: Living in the Hyphen examines what it means to have a background of mixed ancestries that cannot be easily categorized, to be multi-ethnic in a world that tries to fit people into a single category.

Weiye Su’s film Jia follows a young Chinese-Canadian couple visiting family in Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus, at the very moment the pandemic is declared.

Because We Are Girls, by Baljit Sangra, is a feature-length, intimate documentary that tells the story of three Punjabi-Canadian sisters and their sexual abuse.

Jewish Heritage Month

May also marks Jewish Heritage Month. A selection of over 20 recent and older animated and documentary films celebrating the important contributions of Canadians of Jewish descent to the social, economic, political and cultural fabric of Canada are available on the NFB Jewish Heritage Month Channel.
