Follow along as we look back at the moments that made headlines each day during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Feb. 28, 2010: Thirteen Olympic gold medals is nice and all, but for many Canadians, there was only one that mattered: hockey gold. The Olympic hockey tournament drew to a close with a rematch of the 2002 Olympic final in Salt Lake City: Team Canada versus Team USA.
The Canadian side looked poised for a regulation victory, but a late goal by forward Zach Parise, with just 25 seconds remaining, sent the thrilling contest into overtime. Then: a tense, seven minutes and forty seconds later, Sidney Crosby curled off the far wall, took a pass from Jarome Iginla and went five-hole on Ryan Miller for the golden goal. Canada wins, 3-2.
It didn’t matter where in the country you were: if you put an ear to the window, you could hear Canadians shouting for joy. It was the perfect end to a near-perfect Games.
The win gave Canada its 14th gold medal — the most for any country in any Winter Olympics, ever. All that remained was to say goodbye to the world at the closing ceremony, where Catriona Le May Doan got a second opportunity to light the cauldron, and Neil Young sang “Long May You Run” while the Olympic flame was extinguished.
