A town mayor from Maguindanao province was gunned down in front of hotel in Manila late Monday night, police said.
Ad Abdul Wahab Sabal, 45, mayor of Sultan Sumangka (formerly Talitay) in Manguindanao province was about to alight from his vehicle to check in at the Mannra Hotel when his assailant appeared and shot him at about 10 p.m.
The victim died on the spot after sustaining three gunshot wounds, while his wife, identified as Mohana Sabal, along with his bodyguard, were unhurt.
The closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) revealed that the suspect positioned himself on the street before committing the crime.
P/Cpl Arvin Bautista of MPD-Homicide Division told The Manila Times that the police were looking into personal grudge and politics as motives for the crime.
But Bautista said the family refused to answer if the victim had been receiving death threats prior to the incident.
Sabal and his brother, former Talitay mayor Montasir Sabal, were investigated for his alleged involvement in the Davao City night market blast on Sept. 2, 2016 that killed 15 people and wounded 70 others, but both denied the allegations. JOHN ERIC MENDOZA
