One of the largest care homes on the North Shore has been sold to a non-profit society for redevelopment, with over $100 million in financing provided by the B.C. government.
The province announced Friday that Inglewood Care Centre, a 57-year-old West Vancouver facility “which is aging and in need of extensive renovations,” has been sold to Baptist Housing.
The Delta-based non-profit, which focuses on senior care, took over operations at the 230-unit care home on Feb. 3, and is working with residents and Vancouver Coastal Health to improve the management and services there.
“Our government is committed to improving care for seniors,” said health minister Adrian Dix. “We’ve invested in the Inglewood Care Centre to raise the standard of care to the level that seniors deserve.
B.C. Housing put approximately $114 million in public funds towards the sale of the care centre and three adjacent lots, while Baptist Housing kicked in $14.5 million of its own money.
The investment aligns with B.C.’s 10-year housing plan to partner with local governments, non-profit and co-operative housing organizations and other groups to cover the full spectrum of housing needs for British Columbians by 2028. The province’s 2018 budget included a $7-billion investment in affordable housing.
Future plans for the facility include replacing the existing 230 beds while ensuring existing residents are not displaced, and potentially adding more beds in the future.
Baptist Housing also intends to explore additional opportunities to expand housing and care services on the property.
“We are thrilled to partner with Baptist Housing and Vancouver Coastal Health to help seniors stay in the community where they have connections, said housing minister Selina Robinson. “I’m also looking forward to seeing how we can bring more affordable housing options onto this site, so that more seniors in West Vancouver can have a home close to friends and family.”
