The City of Vancouver and the park board have planned number of community celebrations in the coming weeks to mark the tenth anniversary of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Just as they were a decade ago, when Vancouver hosted the Olympics in February and the Paralympics in March, the next two months will be packed with events.

On Feb. 15, for instance, the Creekside Community Centre will host a 2010 Winter Games pin exchange, so if you’ve spent the last decade troubled by your incomplete set, this is your chance to ease that anxiety.

On Feb. 17, Hillcrest, Killarney, and Trout Lake, the other three community centres built for the Games, will host special “Wear Red” family day skates. These community venues are now managed by the park board, and visited by millions annually.

“The pursuit of healthy, active lifestyles inspired by the 2010 Winter Games is on display every day at our facilities,” said Camil Dumont, park board chair. “The multi-purpose Hillcrest is our flagship recreation centre and a destination for residents from across the city. It continues to exceed expectations, receiving 2.5 million visits a year.”

Other events will give Vancouverites the opportunity to train like an Olympian, try a Paralympic sport, learn about Indigenous Art, or take in highlights from 2010 and even relive the golden goal in “Community Living Rooms” all over the city.

“The 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games were an incredible catalyst for change within our community,” said Mayor Kennedy Stewart. “One of the longest lasting legacies was how they inspired future generations to get involved in sport and build meaningful connections. These anniversary celebrations will once again bring us together and remind us that the community pride, inclusivity, and inspiration the games brought to Vancouver is still with us today.”

The Olympic cauldron will also be re-lit at 8:45 a.m. on Feb. 12, following an anniversary breakfast at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
