Alex Eala advances to Australian Open third round

Filipino Alex Eala beat Julia Belgraver of France, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, Tuesday to advance to the third round of the junior girls’ singles in the 2020 Australian Open in Melbourne.

The 14-year-old Eala, a rising star from Rafael Nadal Academy, faces 17-year-old Yi Cody Wong of Hong Kong Wednesday for a spot in the quarterfinal round.

Apart from competing in the singles event, Eala is also scheduled to take the court on the same day in the junior girls’ doubles quarterfinals.

Eala and Indonesian partner Priska Madelyn Nugroho take on the French duo of Aubane Droguet and Selena Janicijevic for a place in the semifinal.

Eala beat Shavit Kimchi of Israel, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, in the girls’ singles first round.
