The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has observed a downtrend in the activity of Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours but it has not discounted the possibility of a major eruption.

Phivolcs said a weak steam emission that generated 500-600 meter-high ash plume was seen at the main crater.

In 24 hours, Phivolcs recorded 5 plotted volcanic earthquakes, with magnitudes ranging from 1.6 to 2.5. A total of 448 volcanic quakes were also recorded, which included 17 low-frequency earthquakes.

Plotted quakes were down from the previous day’s 23 counts. Total volcanic quakes were also down from the 673 the previous day but low-frequency quakes were up from 12 yesterday.

Sulfur measurement went down significantly to an average of 344 tonnes/day from 4,353 tonnes/day yesterday and from around 1,000 tonnes/day during the previous days.

Phivolcs Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division Chief Mariton Bornas said the volcano’s activity had been fluctuating.

“May seeming na paghina ng (weakening of) activity but it doesn’t mean that the danger is over,” Bornas said.
