If there’s ever a reason to drink, this could be it.
Science World’s fifth annual Science of Cocktails event takes place on Feb. 6 and this might just be the year the fundraising effort cracks $1 million.
The adults-only ticketed evening features more than 30 cocktails and a wide range of food options, along with live music, science experiments and bartending competitions woven throughout the program.
Proceeds from ticket sales go toward funding Science World’s class field trip bursary program, which allows underserved kids and schools to visit Science World.
“This is part of our mission – to ignite wonder and empower dreams but we really want to make sure that it’s accessible for everybody, not just the kids and families who can afford the ticket price, but maybe kids who can’t and that’s a really big focus of Science World,” said president Janet Wood.
The program covers between 50 to 100 per cent the cost of admission and bus rental to transport a class, and for every $800 raised, Science World can invite up to two classes to visit. Since 2017, more than 23,000 students have benefitted from the program.
Since the event was first introduced, a total of $950,000 has been raised to benefit the class bursary program. Last year’s event brought in $276,000 but Wood hopes this year will top $280,000, which would put their cumulative total at about $1.23 million.
“So that’s a lot of kids that can come to Science World,” she said.
At a media preview on Jan. 14, Wood said she was eager to see the event in person for the first time, having taken the reigns to Science World from former president Scott Sampson only just this past summer.
“This is my first year, actually, but I can tell you what I’ve sampled was awesome,” said Wood. “This is just a small sample of what will be here that night … so I’m looking forward to trying as many of them as I can.”
Tickets are available online and range from $165 general admission to $289 VIP. Cost of a ticket includes open bar access to all 30 cocktail stations and unlimited number of hors d’oeuvres, open Science World exhibits, entertainment and a tax receipt.
