Independent investigators have been called to New Westminster after a man was hospitalized due to injuries sustained while in police custody.
According to New West police, the individual was alone in a cell Monday around 7 p.m. when he sustained an injury and required medical attention.
“At the time of this reported injury the male was alone in his cell. The cellblock is staffed by an on-duty jail guard,” said New West police Sgt. Jeff Scott. “Because the male was in our custody at the time of his reported injury, we have engaged the Independent Investigations Office (of B.C.) who have since taken conduct of the investigation.
“We have also notified the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner of the incident.”
The man hasn’t been identified.
