Prolonged exposure to the ash spewed by Taal Volcano could lead to a number of ailments, the Department of Health (DoH) warned on Monday.
The department said exposure to volcanic ash and gases could cause nose and throat irritation, coughing, bronchitis-like illness, discomfort while breathing, eye irritation and minor skin problems.
“If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque 3rd said in a statement.
The DoH said the “adverse health effects from a volcanic eruption can be avoided if warnings are diligently heeded.”
An infographic posted by the Health department on Facebook said volcanic ash contains carbon dioxide, sulfur and fluorine, which could be harmful to humans.
Duque advised the public to remain indoors and minimize outdoor activities.
“If venturing outside cannot be avoided, use an N95 mask and wear protective clothing, including goggles,” he said.
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, N95 masks “filter at least 95 percent of airborne particles, but is not resistant to oil.”
The United States Food and Drug Administration said a typical face mask does not give the same protection as an N95 mask because it only blocks “splashes and large-particle droplets.”
Regular face masks do not filter or block very small particles in the air that may be transmitted by coughs, sneezes or certain medical procedures.
Duque also reminded the public to turn off air conditioning and fans, close windows and doors to keep ash and gases from getting inside the house.
“For those evacuating, exercise caution when driving in low visibility and bring extra water for cleaning your front mirrors in case of heavy ashfall,” he said.
