Teammates have identified the North Vancouver teen who died early Saturday morning in a car accident.
Elijah Drasyl, 17, was driving when the crash took place around 4 a.m. in the 6300 block of Marine Drive near the Gleneagles golf course. Drasyl died at the scene, while a 19-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital.
In an Instagram post shared to the account for Argyle Secondary’s football program, Drasyl was described a “born leader” and his death as a “giant loss to the world.”
“We lost an amazing young man. I cannot express how painful it is to hear the news,” the unidentified author wrote.
“Eli Drasyl passed away last night and we’re all in great mourning. Nothing but love and our best wishes go out to Eli’s family and friends in this incredibly difficult time. Eli will always be loved and remembered by us for his will and drive to make his teammates better and get the best out of the team.”
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, the North Vancouver School District had confirmed the victim in the crash was a Grade 12 student at Argyle Secondary School. Parents in the community were also notified of the crash in a letter from the school’s principal, according to multiple reports.
West Vancouver police, along with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, were on scene Saturday morning to determine what caused the crash. Speed is believed to be a factor.
An investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the accident, has dashcam footage, or can provide any other pertinent information is asked to call West –Vancouver police.
