The beginning of a new year and a new decade carries with it the possibility of change and reinvention, and this applies to our homes.
What we’ll be seeing in home decor trends in 2020 is an evolution of the colours, materials and interior design approaches that have proved popular the last few years, say designers Aleem Kassam and Phyllis Lui of Vancouver’s Kalu Interiors.
Gone are the days of matching finishes, Lui says, with mixed materials now being used with abandon.
“Pairing matte and gloss finishes in home decor is very on trend. Matte black has never seen so much attention and will also continue to grow in popularity in 2020. Matte is the new black!” she says.
Tactile textures used for wall coverings, furniture and home decor accessories are going to be in hot demand this year, Lui adds.
“We are excited to see new tactile woods, wall coverings with complex textures and retro-inspired fabrics with heavy-woven attributes. These tactile textures offer the consumer something new in an updated and very current way,” she says.
The amount of home decor materials being released to the market has increased significantly in the last few years, says Lui, allowing for enormous creativity in home design. Examples of this include tile wall treatments used in hallways, over-the-top wallpaper used in bathrooms, and appliances with panels that allow them to blend completely into their surroundings or standout as features.
“In 2020, designers will be taking more risks with where we use materials and how we use them. You can now find wood that would usually be used for the floors showing up as veneers on wall coverings, stone on plumbing, and coloured lacquers on our tubs,” she says.
When it comes to colour trends for 2020, think heritage and tradition flipped on its head, Kassam says.
“Historically, classic colours are being reinvigorated with brighter tones and hues. We see a vast array of greens, blues, oranges, reds and yellows, ranging from herbal greens to burning bright reds, saffron yellows to navy blues, and orange peel to aquas,” he says.
Kassam says light and natural wood tones will continue to be popular in our homes this year, but we’ll see more “punches of pattern” (such as chevron or herringbone) injected into them.
The use of patterns in home design is going to be big this year, Kassam says.
“Speckled terrazzo has made a comeback, and we are seeing a variety of patterns, from art deco to ethnic Moroccan and Oriental designs,” he says.
Home design often takes its cues from the fashion industry, and this year we’ll be seeing this in the use of oversized accessories, Kassam says.
“Expect to see unique hardware like buckles and clasps, and even glitzy adornments in unusual places, like on the handle of a faucet,” he says.
The bigger, bolder and “more fabulous” wall coverings that we’ll be seeing in home design this year are also inspired by what’s trending in fashion, Kassam says.
“Oversized motifs, tropical-inspired vibes, and mural-like coverings are very of the moment. These wall coverings take traditional murals or themes, enlarge them and treat them with a variety of metallic finishes or contemporary colours.”
Wall coverings will also be heavily textured this year, says Kassam.
“We’re seeing the introduction of wood veneers – both panelled and woven – vinyl coverings with dense texture, and 3D panels and tiles made of fabric, wood, and glass,” he says.
