B.C. Coroners Service orders inquest into police killing of Nanaimo man

The B.C. Coroners Service has scheduled an inquest into the death of Craig Andrew Ford, who was shot by police in Nanaimo four years ago.
The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on July 27 at the Nanaimo courthouse.
Ford, 49, was shot on June 14, 2016.
Coroner Michael Egilson and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses to determine the facts surrounding Ford’s death.
The jury can make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances, but not rule on legal responsibility.
Ford was in the 3600-block of Country Club Drive when he encountered RCMP who had responded to a report of a man wielding a knife.
A Nanaimo man with the same name pleaded guilty in 2015 to dangerous driving causing bodily harm in connection with a crash with a minivan carrying a family of four on the Upper Levels Highway in West Vancouver, according to the Victoria Times Colonist. The report says court heard that Ford was high on GHB at the time of the crash. A toddler and Ford were injured.
