One man in his 70s died in a collision with a fuel tanker truck on Highway 1 near Hope Monday.

Emergency crews were called out shortly after 2:30 p.m., about five kilometres north of Hope, near American Creek.

Investigators say the man in his 70s was driving northbound when he crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with a truck carrying diesel fuel. It was snowing and the roads were slushy, according to police.

The driver of the tanker truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The RCMP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, B.C. Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy and Commercial Vehicle and Safety Enforcement officers attended the scene to investigate the cause of the crash.

A hazmat team was called in to recover the diesel fuel from the tanker truck and clean up. Police say there were no reports of any fuel spillage from the tanker.

The highway was closed for more than 12 hours while crews worked to recover fuel from the tanker and gather evidence.

At this time, investigators say impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
